Hotel vs Motel - The Basic Difference . . .
In case of Travel and Tourism the two most common words are hotel and motel. Sometimes these two words are used interchangeably. Because both of them offer a place to stay, take rest and have foods. But there are some fundamental differences between hotel and motel. Let's clarify the concept . . .
This concept can be easily understood if you know the actual meaning of motel. A motel is a roadside hotel specially designed for the motorists. A motel is a place where visitors can park their motor vehicles.
Suppose you live in City A. And you wanna go to City B in weekend. You will go there by car. You need two days to reach there. And it's impossible to drive continuously for two days. You need a break. In midway, you got a place to stay at night, a car parking and other facilities. Then you start your journey for City B in the next day. After reaching there, you go to a hotel for staying there some days.
Now try to understand -
- In City A, where you live, is your residence.
- On the way, where you stayed for one night, is the motel.
- In City B, where you lived in hotel, is the hotel indeed.
Hope the concept is clear. Now have a look at other differences between the two . . .
- Usually a hotel will be located at your destination. And the motel will be located on roadside.
- In motel, people usually stay for a short period of time. Usually when they take a break during their journey to a remote place. And in case of hodel, visitors would like to stay for a longer period time ranging from few days to few weeks.
- Hotels are usually more luxurious and expensive than that of motels.
- Motel is often called as Motor Hotel. They usually have exterior car parking facility. Sometimes directly in front of your room. But in case of hotel, the things are little different.
- Motels are not designed for large number of people. But in hotels large number of people can stay.
- Hotels can be ranked from 1 star to 5 star. But such rating system is not notable in case of motels.

Thanks for staying with Marks Pedia . . .
My family is planning to go on a trip, but it will be a long road trip and we need to find a place to stay on the way there. I didn't know that there was a difference between a motel and a hotel. I never considered the name of it "moter" hotel. It makes a lot more sense now why they are smaller and you can find motels in more remote areas than hotels! Thanks for the clarification!
